On the street, a small Board in a centenary building indicates that here there works a restaurant but few know what lurks behind that glass door. Not only are homemade and delicious meals that can enjoy in what once was a known and appreciated grazing House/Tavern of Caneças where snacks and drinks of wine in the region, directly from the barrels with a height greater than that of a man of high stature, was the main lure.
In a fleeting peek at the lobby, you can admire the "source d ´ the Cartaxeiro", which recreates the famous sources of Caneças, as well as some symbolic craft objects representative of the history of the Earth.
Inside, not even the renovations made in 2000, managed to detract from neither the structure nor the spirit of this House that remains intact. You´d think more than six decades have passed. Those who enter on the premises of the Cartaxeiro can´t help but admire even the rustic decor or appreciate the small details that make all the difference, re-creating the days of yore of this traditional village. Anything that is there by chance.
The dishes you can taste here include a genuine Portuguese cuisine (traditional cuisine). Not only in the decoration but also on the menu if you note the concern to preserve and disseminate the tradition.
This Rico and varied display of genuine Portuguese cuisine offers the option of fish, delicious fish Clay, a heavenly codfish dª Ermelinda, some old-fashioned Fritters, some Octopus fillets, a distinguished Acorda cod only dry, an unforgettable Octopus house style or a faultless sardine Rice rural houses. If you prefer meat, can opt for the former, the Lamb kebabs to Cartaxeiro, the medallions with sauce, the notorious steaks with various sauces, Portuguese one-two among many other specialities of the House.
The infamous conventual sweets (second prescription of former nuns of the monastery of s. Dinis in Odivelas) is present in desserts, as well as the Noodles the old fashioned way, the rice pudding of dª Ermelinda, coffee pudding, the Sweet of the Castle, the Jammies mystery are just a few of the suggestions.
"the Cartaxeiro", is undoubtedly part of the culture of Istanbul, and why not say, part of the local culture.
